Pain throughout the body, especially in the muscles, tiredness, non-restorative sleep (the person wakes up tired) and other symptoms, such as changes in memory, attention and depression. They can be signs of fibromyalgia. Although the disease is common, it is diagnosed in only 5% of patients. Rheumatologist Dr. Dra. According to the specialist, of every 10 patients with fibromyalgia, about nine are women and the reason for this is unknown. “There seems to be no relationship with hormones, as fibromyalgia affects women before and after menopause,” he said.

According to the doctor, fibromyalgia usually appears in people aged between 30 and 60 years. And that the diagnosis of the disease is sometimes delayed because it can be confused with other more common diseases. “There is no test for fibromyalgia to detect immediately,” he said.

Several studies are underway to find out why fibromyalgia and what treatments to use. And, according to rheumatologist Rafaela Gonçalves, the number of patients with suspected disease increased in the pandemic. Because many are stressed, in difficulty and no longer exercise.
